Your University and Students' Union are working together to create a sector leading student facility that will enhance the experience of everyone studying at the University of Hull.
We're talking to everyone who uses the building and those that will use it in the future to ensure that the design is fit for purpose and as future proof as possible.
This project will be completed over two academic years, with work happening in stages to ensure as little disruption to current students as possible. You can visit the 'news' section of this site to find out what's happening and when.
>>> This month we have
Started our move to the second floor to realise the first phase of this project. Our Student Presidents are moving to their new home on 16th August followed by the Student Voice and Opportunities Team. You can contact them in all the usual ways or visit the second floor to find their new home.
In September the current Ask HU desk will move to the first floor (and will be known as the Central Hub) and our Membership Services and Advice Centre will operate from this area on the second floor.
>>> WHATS HAPPENED SO FAR
Throughout the summer vacation period we have been working with the University and Space architects to develop designs that will meet the needs of our members and improve the experience of using University and Students Union services. Work is ongoing to produce a design that achieves this within the budget available.
One of the key areas of feedback from students was to make it easier to understand which services were run by the University and which were Students' Union and make them easier to access. Therefore one of the key design considerations of this project is to bring together student facing services for both organisations into separate spaces and make them more accessible. To realise this ambition, in August work began on the third floor of Student Central to bring the Universities student services team together in one space. University teams including careers, the Central Hub, accommodation, registry services and financial services will now move to the first floor (the current location of the Students' Union Membership Services Team and Student Presidents).
Your Student Union Membership Services and Student Presidents will now be located on the second floor. The move begins on the 16th August and will be phased over the following month so all services are in place ahead of the start of WelcomeFest. You can access all of the services that you are used to, just one floor up!
We've also listened to what students have been telling us throughout the consultation and made some exciting changes ready for the start of the new academic year. Read more about them here.
In May we held workshops with postgraduate, international students and students that live at home during their studies to understand how their needs may differ from other students.
Shared the results of our student survey with you here so you can see how students ranked various building issues and suggestions from the workshop stage of our consultation.
Invited Postgraduate and International students and students that live at home to sign up for additional consultation so we can talk to you about what you need from our spaces. Sign up here. March
Closed our all student survey, The survey was developed following the workshop sessions. Common themes were extracted and students were asked to rank responses them in order of importance/preference. 491 students completed the survey.
January - February
Between December 2017 and February 2018 we ran a series of workshops with current students, elected representatives and students from a local college and sixth forms. Find out what they said here.
We used this information to create an all student survey which we launch on valentines day - asking what you love and loathe about our building.
We invited architects, Space to visit Student Central and evaluate the building. They shared with us what they felt were the strengths of the spaces we have and what the opportunities were to improve.
The University reviewed these plans and approved £4.5 million to be spent on Student Central over the next two years. Read the announcement here.
We began our consultation on the project by running interactive workshops with groups of current and potential students attending local sixth forms and colleges. You can register your interest to take part in future paid workshops here.
